In June 2023, Amazon hosted Nexus, its first global design systems summit, uniting over 1,000 Amazonians across design, engineering, and product disciplines. Nexus was a groundbreaking event designed to foster connection, collaboration, and innovation within Amazon's design systems community. With 22 distinct design systems across Amazon powering thousands of products, the summit provided a space for members of these independent teams to come together and share ideas, learn best practices, and strengthen Amazon's design culture.
As one of six core organizers from multidisciplinary teams across Seattle, Chicago, and Berlin, I had the privilege of playing a central role in bringing Nexus to life—coining the summit’s name, designing the brand identity, and overseeing development of creative assets produced by volunteer designers from teams across Amazon.
The name Nexus signifies a link between a connected group or series, a reflection of the summit’s mission to connect the diverse design systems across Amazon, as well as the multidisciplinary
teams—design, engineering, and product—that rely on and contribute to these systems.
The logo features a chain of three colorful, translucent overlapping circles. Where the circles intersect, richer, brighter hues emerge, symbolizing the powerful outcomes created when different teams and disciplines come together. Each of the three circles represents one of the core disciplines: design, engineering, and product, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that
underpins successful design systems.
